Trailer History

It seems the need for a trailer was first acted on just before the 1900s began. A car was loaded onto a truck for transport before purchase (much like it still is done today). The 1:1 vehicle ratio wasn't satisfying enough for our growing industrial country and there existed a need to move more automobiles and heavy equipment faster than one at a time. By 1914, the idea had evolved into an attachment which could be connected and disconnected to a Ford Model T. August Fruehauf was attributed with building this first trailer which could tow a boat from one place to another. He went on to establish the Fruehauf Trailer Company in Detroit in 1918 which would manufacture what he called  semi-trailers. During his run, some astounding inventions were created, most notably a trailer with a hydraulic dump, tanker trailers, shipping container, and the automatic fifth wheel coupling. The number of patents to come out of his company exceeded 1000. His company would continue under different family members, all the way to the 80s and 90s, at which point it began producing new items, eventually diversifying, and being sold off in various pieces.
