Exploring St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg—commonly known as St. Pete or the Sunshine City—is located on the Pinellas Peninsula between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. It’s known for its coastal views, creative energy, and, most famously, its sunshine. The city earned its nickname after setting the Guinness World Record for 768 consecutive days of sunshine from 1967 to 1969, a streak that remains unmatched today.
Founded in 1888 with the arrival of the railroad and officially incorporated in 1903, St. Pete grew from a small waterfront town into one of Florida’s most vibrant coastal communities. Historic districts now blend with modern development, a thriving arts and culture backdrop, including the world-renowned Salvador Dalí Museum plus tons of street art, alongside a thriving LGBTQ+ scene and easy access to some of the nation’s top-ranked beaches.
St. Pete’s Waterfront Destinations
- St. Pete Pier: One of the city’s most iconic waterfront spots, this massive 26-acre pier feels like its own neighborhood with restaurants, art installations, splash pads, and skyline views stretching right into Tampa Bay. Its redesign is considered one of Florida’s largest modern waterfront projects, transforming the old pier into a vibrant community space where families and singles mingle, eat, drink, and play.
- St. Pete Beach: Just minutes from downtown, this Gulf-side favorite is often ranked the #1 Beach in the U.S., known for its calm waves, water sports, beach bars, and long stretch of white sand. It’s also home to the historic Don CeSar hotel—nicknamed “The Pink Palace”—a landmark loved by visitors and celebrities since the 1920s.
- Fort De Soto Park: Further south, this five-island park offers quiet beaches, long paved trails, camping areas, kayak routes, and a historic fort overlooking the bay. It’s also one of the country’s top birding locations, with hundreds of migrating species passing through its natural coastline each year.
Tampa Bay Arts & Museum District
- Dali Museum: A centerpiece of St. Pete’s arts scene, this museum holds the largest Dalí collection outside Spain and is instantly recognizable by its glass “Enigma” façade made of 900+ triangular panels. Inside, immersive and tech-driven exhibits create a surreal experience that feels like stepping directly into Dalí’s imagination.
- Central Arts District: The creative heart of downtown, this district is known for its walkable mural trail featuring over 50 large-scale murals, along with galleries, working studios, the Morean Arts Center, the Chihuly Collection, coffee shops, and indie boutiques. It’s probably the only place in Tampa Bay where you can watch glassblowing, browse local art, and catch live theater all within a few blocks.
Sunshine City Nature Escapes
- Sunken Gardens: One of St. Petersburg’s most popular nature attractions—a tropical oasis built inside a drained lake 10 feet below sea level. This historic garden is filled with waterfalls, winding walking paths, and more than 50,000 tropical plants, some over a century old, making it one of the city’s top outdoor things to do for visitors and locals.
- Weedon Island Preserve: Offers a wilder escape, with mangrove tunnels perfect for kayaking, elevated boardwalks, abundant wildlife viewing, and a cultural center tied to archaeological discoveries over 1,000 years old.
Bayfront Venues & Sporting Landmarks
- Tropicana Field: One of St. Pete’s major landmarks, known for its distinctive domed roof—one of the largest cable-supported structures of its kind. The stadium has long served as the home of the Tampa Bay Rays and has hosted everything from college sports to large community events, making it a central part of the city’s sports and entertainment scene.
During and post-pandemic, most of Florida saw an influx of new residents as people looked for warm, outdoorsy locations where they could spend their time and dollars. St. Pete saw a bump then but the population growth has slowed even though home prices continue to rise. As development continues, funded by the city and new residents, we’re pleased to help with miscellaneous metal projects on commercial and residential sites. From large to small, we’re proud to put our name on things like railings, awning, stairs and decorative custom work for local properties. Give us a call today if you have metal fabrication needs.
